Emergencies can take many forms, from house fires through to flooding or widespread power outages

What should you do in an emergency?

  • If an emergency occurs dial 999 and alert the appropriate emergency service.
  • If the building is on fire – Get Out, Stay Out and Call 999.
  • If there is no fire or other dangers in the building, consider the – Go In, Stay In, Tune In rule.
  • If possible and safe, pass on warnings to neighbours and check on the vulnerable people living near to you.
  • Limit phone calls – it keeps lines free. Someone may be trying to contact you!

Neighbours

In an emergency, some people are more vulnerable than others; for example, the elderly, very young or disabled are more likely to suffer from the effects of extreme heat and cold. You should always ensure that you and your family are safe first. However, remembering to help your friends and neighbours if you can is also important. Checking on someone’s well-being and providing extra support, such as chatting, providing items like blankets or collecting supplies for them, can make a big difference.

Think about which neighbours you may need to check in on - 10% of the village is not online so they are unable to access up-to-date information.

What3Words

What3Words is used regionally and nationally by emergency services when responding to an incident. Street addresses aren’t always accurate enough to specify precise locations, such as building entrances, and don’t exist for parks and many rural areas. This makes it hard to find places and prevents people from describing exactly where help is needed in an emergency.

Every 3-metre square of the world has been given a unique combination of three words. What3Words can be used for emergencies, navigation, e-commerce, delivery and more.
